Royal Palace of Caserta & Gardens
In 1752, King Charles III of Bourbon ordered to the architect Luigi Vanvitelli a building which could compete with the most beautiful royal palaces in Europe, especially with Versailles.
He believed that Naples was too vulnerable in case of an attack from the sea, that is why he decided to build the Royal Palace in the inner side, like Caserta (30 km in the North of Naples).
This monumental building has been defined the last great masterpiece of Italian Baroque; it was achieved in 1845, it has a rectangular shape, and it is divided in four courtyards. The Royal Garden of Caserta, one of the most beautiful in Europe, extends for about 120 hectares. With its vegetation, its fountains and waterfalls, it was declared as part of Unesco World Heritage.
